Despite the fact that the Nairnshire Constabulary and (while it existed) Nairn Burgh Police each and every had an office of sorts within the Burgh of Nairn, this was the very first objective-built Police constructing.

It is minuted in the records of the Nairnshire Police Committee that in March 1868, Mr Hector Maclean developed an supply to sell – at 6d per square foot with £5 extra for the dykes – as significantly of his ground &quotsouthward of King Street and westward of Free of charge Church Street&quot as may well be required for the Police Headquarters, to incorporate Station Property, Police Offices, and dwellings for two males&quot.

The offer was accepted, to the extent of 70 feet from King Street along Free of charge Church Street.

Mr Reid , Architect, Nairn, was instructed to draw up plans. These have been developed at a further meeting on 17 March, and a number of alterations were ordered. Two days later he was back with the amended plans, which had been ultimately approved right after some a lot more tinkering.

Reid estimated the expense of the building would be £700, exclusive of the acquire of the land, and the go-ahead was offered, subject to the Secretary of State’s approval.

The Scottish Workplace duly approved, and on 16/six/68 estimates for constructing the new building have been accepted from:

Robert Squair, Mason, Nairn for Masonry operate: £358
George B Mackintosh, Douglas Street, for Carpentry function: £174:18:0d

—————————-
Total : £617: 8:0d

On 2nd July the contract for the new Headquarters was signed. It was also decided to place glazed bricks as an alternative of ordinary ones in the new cells, to a height of 7 feet from ground level, which would expense an extra £5.

The Chief Constable, Mr Stirling had proposed that Pc Fraser occupy the decrease flat of the new building rent-free of charge in consideration of him (or more most likely his wife) taking charge of the cells and maintaining the offices clean and in great order. This was approved, as was the proposal that Fraser also obtain an annual allowance of 5/- to cover outlays in this respect.

Sergeant Ross (who was the Deputy Chief Constable and only rank in the force other than the Chief) was awarded the tenancy of the upper flat at a weekly rent of 1/4d (one shilling and 4 pence) which would be deducted from his wages.

By the January meeting of 1869 the new Headquarters was constructed but Mr Reid stated that ahead of getting declared completed he felt the internal woodwork of the offices ought to be painted. Soon after a site check out, the Committee instructed Mr Reid to get the entire internal woodwork painted – except for the houses – with three coats of plain paint.

Furnishings and miscellaneous items to kit out the new building had price £11:15:3d.

Mr Stirling had drawn up a set of rules for the use and cleaning of the offices and cells, for the Sheriff’s approval.

An inventory was also recorded of totally each item in the new Police
Office, and it was also agreed to have the words &quotPolice Workplace&quot painted above the entrance to the constructing and in the lobby on the door into the Public office. &quotChief Constable’s Office&quot would also be painted on the door of Mr Stirling’s workplace.

The inventory tends to make fascinating reading. Only grates (kitchen and room) and gas fittings in each houses, plus window rollers and fittings (upstairs flat only), are listed in respect of the two flats.

The Chief Constable’s office was equipped with the following:

mahogany writing table,
pine pigeon hole cupboard,
oil cloth floor covering,

grate with fire accessories,
letter copying press with stand,
two wire gauze window blinds,

The &quotStrong rooms&quot (cells) – have been provided with:

2 slop pails,
two strong jugs,

a stove, shovel and poker.

After all bills have been paid for the new Office, like £106:8:six to Hector Maclean for the land and Mr Davidson’s legal fees, the total sum came to £792:16:9d.

At this stage the Force consisted of six men, (1 Chief, 1 Sergrant and 4 Constables, 3 of which have been stationed outwith the Burgh).

The force grew more than time, and ultimately outgrew the developing. In the 1960s, a new Police Station was built on the opposite side od the road (and has just lately been rebuilt from scratch on the identical internet site).

As soon as this grand old creating became redundant for police purposes, it was used for varous public functions, such as WRVS, Tourist Infomation , and Council Social Function Department. It now stands empty and boarded up, due to have currently been demolished for a new supermaket improvement, but which has not as but come to pass.

Baked Bananas, string cheese, and orange juice for breakfast the rest is for lunch. The banans did NOT maintain nicely, alas. I believed I’d attempt it because I had ripe bananas and wanted something other than banana bread. Subsequent time I will stick to the bread.
