Converge: Ghraib Bag

In conjunction with the exhibition "Out of Hand: Materializing the Post Digital," the NYC DOT Urban Art Program and the Museum of Arts and Design present Michael Rees’ sculpture "Converge: Ghraib Bag" in the pedestrian plaza on Broadway between 58th Street and Columbus Circle. The 17 foot sculpture was manufactured from a computer file using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines and software from one frame in an animation. A video component, which depicts two sculptures interacting with one another, is accessible through a QR Tag reader free app.
"Out of Hand: Materializing the Post Digital," explores the 21st-century phenomenon of extraordinary creativity engendered by advanced methods of computer-assisted production known as digital fabrication. Organized by the Museum of Arts and Design, the timely exhibition is the first to examine this interdisciplinary trend through pioneering works by an international cast of established artists, architects and designers.
